In 2009 my wife and I visited Yellowstone National Park and we hiked down the many steps to the observation deck built just above the lower Yellowstone Falls. There is a tension in the air as this river maybe 8-10 feet deep approached a precipice and falls hundreds of feet down into the canyon. With this painting I wanted to capture that tension and energy as the river flows toward the precipice. It's exciting and mesmerizing to watch.

This is an oil painting on canvas which at the time was a fairly new medium for me. For me painting with oils is a completely different experience and process than acrylic painting. The look of oils is so rich and at least for me it forces me to paint in a completely different way because of the slow drying nature of the paints. I definitely like the rich colors and the added texture to the surface of the painting so I think I'll be painting more and more with oil paints.
